Film Analysis: Subculture

Film Analysis
Subculture

Subculture is word that everyone has heard about, but do we really understand the mean of this word and what is a subculture and where is the subculture existing.

Subculture according to the subculture theory study of sociology scholars at the Chicago School in the 1920 describing a subculture as deviant behavior and discussed deviance as a product of social problems within society. regarding to a subculture within USA is mainly a violent subculture group such Motorcycle Gangs, but later on for contemporary theorists, the concept itself is controversial, and some align with a “post-subculture” perspective suggesting subculture no longer describes the collective activities.

Now we know in term of theory what does it mean but in practical what is subculture. In today blog I will introduce one type of subculture that existing in Japan that have a bad representation from Japanese society perspective.

This subculture are OTAKU, Otaku is a Japanese word translating to a young person who is obsessed with computers or particular aspects of popular culture to the detriment of their social skills. For Japanese contemporary society OTAKU is group of people which having interesting in thing that be useless for a modern economic life such as Anime, Manga and Idols groups. OTAKU being is a group of people that having lack of self and nation responsibility in helping moving country forward.

In Japanese Society Otaku have a bad representation and was seen as a group of people that stock in their childhood dream. As I mention earlier that there is many difference type of OTAKU in Japanese society that most of those is concealing their identity from society, but there is one type of OTAKU that not ever try to to conceal their identity on the contrary this group are very open and proudly presenting themselves as a OTAKU, they are Idols OTAKU.

Idols OTAKU not only existing in Japan but has been expanding to Thailand according to the expanding of 48 group that have a good acceptation form Thai society. Idols OTAKU is a unique of of OTAKU because of their preferment of identity, as I mention earlier that group proudly present themselves as OTAKU so they have a unique way of presenting their identity by having a unique cheer dance.

Other than a unique dance cheer one thing that every Idols OTAKU need to have indoor to prove them self as any OTAKU is keyring or a photoset of their beloved's Idols.

By the time that Japanese Idols OTAKU in Japan having a bad representation from Japanese society, in the mean In Thailand Thai Idols OTAKU only being represented as a fan culture similar to many other fan culture. In Thailand OTAKU don't really have a bad representation due to Thai society do not care or pay attention to them. For Thai society the existing of OTAKU is nothing for the Society divergence from Japan that very conservative and care in their national representation.

Film Analysis: Performative Documentary

Performative Documentary

In today blog I will be analysing one my chosen documentary that not an ordinary documentary, but is's a hybrid documentary. The documentary that I am chosen to analyse is a hybrid documentary that combine documentary and a reality show with in once. This documentary are call Chasing Mummies, Chasing Mummies is a documentary of a History Channel.

Chasing Mummies is a documentary that have lot of performant happen, and the main star of this documentary is Dr. Zahi Hawass Egyptian Archaeology leading a young Archeology to discover Egypt. First performant that can be spot out is when Dr. Hawass working with the young Archaeology he was acting as a leader and the one that known in everything about the Mummies and History of Egypt and alway scare and put those young Archeology in a high pressure.

In other hand, when he switch to speak with a camera "aka the Audience" his personality was change, because when he speak to the camera it feel like that he speaking to his history student, he explain everything very well with a soft voice difference to how he speak to those young Archeology, it seem like Dr. Hawass have a multiple personality in this show.

Watching Chasing Mummies is make me feeling I was there with them, due to the camera work that  follow them especially Dr. Hawass everywhere, it feel like I am observing on how the Archeology working in Egypt and how did they handle with thing such as weather, pressure and lot of information that Dr. Hawass try to put into their brains.

Watch Chasing Mummies I think I a received more than just entertaining, but I feel more likely to get an experience of working as an Archeology in Egypt because of the spectatorship of this show is try to make the audiences feel that way. They want us the audience to feel be unite to the Archeology.

Film Analysis: AV Essay

AV ESSAY:

AV essay, what is an AV essay? AV essay is an Audio Visual essay, it have a same principal as the writing essay but, it's more enjoyable than a traditional writing essay because its entertaint. The benefits of AV essay other than entertaining is AV essay use less time in-order understand the point that the author want to communicate comparing to the traditional writing essay.

In today blog I will briefly summaries the argument and critically assess of my chosen AV essay in terms of technique, clarity and originality of the work. My chosen AV essay is an essay about the Jackie Chan my favourite Actor, filmmaker and a director on how he make action comedy. The AV essay that I has chosen to analyse is creating by Tony Zhou.

This AV essay has make an interesting argument about the editing and the shooting of an action scene of the Eastern especially Hong Kong film industry in comparison to the western film industry regarding to Jackie Chan movies and how Jackie make is action funny in the same time as violent. For example there is a comparison between western shooting technique where camera operator moving around to make the the scene more violent because actor don't know how to fight but in other hand Jackie chan is shoot is action scene in wild angle in-order to see every movement of the actor and stuntman because they know how to fight.

The originality of this AV essay is quite original, because no one of done something like this before, there never have anyone who break down Jackie chan fight scene to find out how hoe it been shot and  a humorous the hidden within Jackie fight scene. Other than the originality I have to say that the creator and narrator of the this AV essay has done a great job in clarify their argument on Jackie Chan sense of humour in his action scene, because the narrator has explain everything very clear together with a evident of the particular sequence.

In term of the technique that use in creating this AV essay is quite simple, but yet interesting and very entertaining. This AV essay has use a very simple way of explaining scene by scene, cut by cut of the Jackie Chan action sequence in comparison to the westerner action sequence.

Overall I have to say that this AV essay is very informative and knowledgeable and also entertaining to watch. The Creator has done a great job.

Film Theories: Embodied Cinema

This is a story of a traveller, who has been visited so many places and so many countries. The above photographs are a photograph that the traveller was taken from a place that he has visited before. Photographic is a way that the traveller memorises each place that he has visited, those photographs is also a method of communication for the traveller.

Every photograph has difference meaning in them self, each photography is containing they own individual story, but it still link to each other. The first photo is a photo of a small boat in the middle of the sea, the message of this photograph is us human was like that boat, we just a small object in this planet. However, the message of the photograph is not that important because everyone who has seen this photo will define this photo differently. The reason that I has use this photo as an open photo is because I would like to communicate that the traveller is a lonely traveller, who traveller by himself.

In relation to Kuleshov Effect, the second photograph should have some relation to the first photo so the view could connect between them. In relation to connect the first photo to the second photo, the second photo should identify where is the traveller at that moment of taking the first photo. The important of those photographs is to communicate that life is freedom, use your life to experience the world.

Documentary Production: Critical Analysis

Critical Analysis
This short documentary is one of the most difficult tasks that we been given, due to many reasons. In order to produce this documentary, we have traveling around London and also to Brighton to filmed. In this documentary project most of the team members work so hard in order to produce the best documentary ever.

This documentary has using the materiality documentary mode in presenting the main character, because we believe that object always say something or mean something to the owner. For this character camera and anything that related to the camera is an object that very important and meaningful, this is why camera always appear in many scenes with the main character. For the main character camera is not only a tool, camera is a passion and friend that helping him to reaching his destination.

Another concept of this documentary is to break point of view in stereotype of the Eastern European in the perspective our audience who is Western European, because people often thinking that the Eastern European can only be a labour worker or something that not related to creativity. This documentary has breaking this stereotype and ideology, we want to make people realise that those people can be more than just a labour worker and use him as an inspirational character for other people.

In relation to the materiality this is why the documentary is beginning with introducing the main character together with his camera. The opening scene of this documentary has been designed very well, because it has included many elements and object that meaning something to the main character such a camera that he is holding in his hand and the location that shooting the opening scene also meaning something to the main character.

The outcome of the documentary is very good in my opinion, but it still not the best. If the production team have more time or a chance to re-work on this documentary there is few things that could be improve. The improvement that the documentary should re-work on is the lighting and of the interview scene, in this particular scene the main character face is quite dark due to the camera is facing directly to the light. If the production team have a chance to go back in film this documentary against this should be fix.

Documentary Production: Post-production progression

Post-production progression

Post-production is one of the most important stages of film making due to this stage is a stage that the film or documentary is been more visual. During this stage, the director of photography, editor and me who is the director of the documentary and director of the team have met and had a look on assembling of the footage for the first time. In post-production on stage I, the director of the documentary and director of the team together with the director of photography have listened to a feedback from the editor about what kind of short that we need more and what need to be improved.

At this stage every team member who must contribute in work of post-production has done their best to make this documentary coming out as good as possible. During the post-production stage me as the director of the team has discussed with the editor about the footage that I have filmed together with the director of photography, on what need to be improved and what kind of short that the editor wants more such as, a Broll short, cutaway short and etc. During this stage, I also discuss with the producer on arranging some more shooting date with the character regard to the feedback from the editor about extra short that she need to have for the editing.

During the post-production stage we have meet and discuss on everything to make this documentary coming as good as possible, everyone has done their best to make this project be the best project of the year for us.

Film Theories: Franchise Film

Franchise film

Franchise film is one of the most popular type of film now a day, it is a truth that cannot be denied that in the modern cinema franchise is a type of film that can create a huge income to a studio due to the fan culture. In the modern cinema we can see many studios try to produce much franchise film as possible as they can, such as The Avenger franchise of Marvel Cinematic Universe, Harry Potter from Warner&Bro AVP of the 20 Century and many more franchise, but there is not every franchise film will always success. There some franchise that not really success even it is staring by a top star like the Dark Universe of the Universal studio.

In today blog I will be analyses one of the most success franchise film in the franchise film history. My chosen franchise is Pirate of the Caribbean. Pirate of the Caribbean, one of the most success franchise due to many reasons, in this blog I will analyse on why this franchise so success and two main attraction method that it uses.

Pirate of the Caribbean is first introduced in 2003 under the name of Pirate of the Caribbean: The curse of black peal staring by Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and Geoffrey Rush. This film is the most success film out of another Pirate of the Caribbean due to the fact Curse of black peal is the lowest in budget out of 5 film but the profit that this film made worldwide is very close to other Pirate of the Caribbean film that used 2 or 3 time budget more.
When this movie first introduces, studio have used many attractions' method to make people interest in watching this movie such as the attraction of stars and the fact that this film is fulfil many people dream. Pirate of the curse of black peal is not the first pirate movies in the history of cinema but it is the first pirate movies that touching the story of fantasy and adventure of the pirate that many only experiences in reading. Pirate of the Caribbean the curse of black peal is an opening chapter of the new style of adventure when cinema is taking people out to the space with Alien franchise, Pirate of the Caribbean is talking audience back to the good old day when they used to be a kids and dreaming of hunting for a treasure on a lost island, these movies has fulfil many people dream and imagination, this is the franchise first attraction.

Pirate of the Caribbean and the use of attraction of star, it a truth that con not be denied that to make people interest in watching a new movies is not easy and rely on story only is not enough, so the use of top star and well know stars is the answer of promoting a movie. It’s a truth that cannot be denied that Johnny Depp is one of many reasons that make Pirate of the Caribbean franchise become one of the most success franchise movies.

Documentary Production: Career Aspiration

My career aspiration

In year time where I will be? What I will doing? This is a question that I have asked myself for long time, it is a question that I think I could not answer it because no one can predict a future and sometime thing is not happened right what we expect it to be. In ten years' time one thing that I quite sure of is I will be somewhere in Thailand, but for the career am still not sure what it will be.

From expectation there are many careers that I would like to do such, and I think that can do it for many reasons, first type of career that I might see my doing in the next ten-year time is a university lecturer in South East Asia history and culture due to the reason that I will do a master degree on this subject and I have an older sister who teach in this course. My next careers that I might see my elf doing in the ten years' time is working in the Ministry of Foreign affair in Thailand or at the Royal Thai Embassy somewhere abroad due to the reason that my parent have a friend who work in this area.

This is just an expectation that I am expected to see myself in ten-year, but who it might not happen or it might happen. Just let it be.

Approach To Narrative: Contemporary TV Series: The Goblin

Contemporary TV Series: The Goblin

In today blog I will be writing about a contemporary TV Series describing about the use and development of character in relation to the narrative of the series. My chosen TV Series for today blog is a South Korean TV Series call Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, but mostly knowing in Asia as the Goblin.

This TV Series is one of the best of South Korean TV Series, were staring by Gong Yoo as a Goblin or Kim Shin, Kim Go-eun as Ji Eun-tak, Lee Dong Wook as Wang Yeo or the unnamed grim reaper, Yoo In-na as Kim Sun or Sunny together with Yook Sungjae as Yoo Deok-hwa. The Goblin is TV Series that running with 5 main difference character that very important to the narrative and stories of the series. In the Goblin we have 5 main character but only 4 of them that their character are developed throughout the series, which is the character of Kim shin or Goblin, Unnamed grim reaper, Sunny and Ji Eun-tak, but in today blog am not going to talk on all 4 character on how each of them develop throughout the series. I will pick just one character to talk about in this blog post.

The character that am chosen to talk about in this blog post is the character of Kim Shin or the Goblin that staring by Gong Yoo. The narrative of Kim shin is developed along with the development of the series, at the beginning of the series we don’t know much about the Goblin not even his real name. At the beginning his narrative only informing an audience with a basic information of him, such as the Goblin he used to be an army general back in history of Korean, he was executed by the king because he was slandered. Kim Shin has begging to the god for a revenge on the king, god has agreed to him, but in order to get a revenge he has live in an immortal life that will not end until he found the legendary Goblin’s bride that could end his life.
Throughout the time in story the character of Kim Shin has developed his emotion from a character that don’t care about anything into a character that thinking of another person. The narrative of Kim Shin has since he meets with Ji Eun-tak a young high school girl who could be a legendary Goblin’s bride. After both characters were met, we can the development in the character of Kim Shin such he doesn’t want to die any more and he is falling in love with Ji Eun-tak

The expansion of time in this story has serving the character of Kim Shin in allowing his character to develop from a character who want to end his own life and a cold blood into a character that more caring about other and learn to live with other people. Time is very important to this character, because this character is a character that must use time in development due to this character have to be mysterious both for us the audience and other character in the series.

Film Theories: Experience of co-writing

Experience of co-writing

Film theories is a module that given an opportunity to experience co- writing essay. I have been in education for the rest in my life, but I never done or experience anything like co-writing essay before.

When I first know that I must co-writing essay with someone in a pair I am so worry due to the reason that am not good at working with someone that I don’t know, and this work is the work that I am grading I even more worry, but for this module I was lucky enough to work with my friend that I know for a year so it like a relieve for me to work with him.

The benefit of co-writing essay first thing is I don’t have to every research by myself, there is some who can help me. Seconded benefit is we can share an idea and discuss the best way of producing work. Third benefit is I don’t have to write a so much because we in pair we can share a good deal of writing, so I don’t have to write all 2000 words essay by myself.

For co-writing essay there is not only the benefit that I see, in this module I also see the drawback of co-writing essay which is, if the person that you are paring with is lack of responsibility it will be a problem. For example, one of my friends she was pairing with a person who have lack of responsibility, so she ends up with writing 2000 words essay by herself, but I am so lucky because my co-writer is so reliable, and he is care about the work.

One thing that have learned from co-writing essay is to choose the right person to work with if not you will end up in a bad situation.

Documentary Production: Progress reflection

Documentary production A documentary is a form of film making that I have interest for a long time, so this project is a project that I am enjoyed the most in producing work. In the post-production of this project, it has been a difficult time for me, because of the brief is very limited my creativity, so I have to try to find a way to work with the brief that I have been given.

During the early time of post-production after I am getting used to the brief everything it seemed to go well, the main character Susana and story have been prepared, shot lists and camera work has been designed and the documentary is almost ready to be shoot now we only have to wait for Susana our main character to confirm the shooting date with the producer and every team members is care about this project and put a lot of effort into making this documentary.
Everything seems to go well at the beginning and I have a feeling that the project will come out great, but my expectation is been ruin because of the Susana our main character is lack of responsibly, every time when the producer of the documentary who is a friend of Susana our main character contact her about the shooting date Susana our main character all way said can we do it on next week any other day, then when it comes to the shooting, Susana our main character all way make an excuse to not shooting on the day that she has told us. This problem has been carried on for about 3 weeks until I feel like this will not if we keep continuing with this person.
In order to solve this problem, we as a team has decided to change our the main character for our documentary in order to move forward, because if we still use Susana as the main character for the documentary I have a feeling of this documentary will not be made.

Documentary Production: Camera format

To produce one documentary, it contains so many elements in order to produce it, as a film student who has been taking part in few production groups and also taking a role of director of photography (DOP). I personally prepare the short list or idea of how each short will be shot during the pre-production, but before I can design a short list first, I must know what kind of camera I will use for this filming and what format is suitable for the film and camera.
When talking about camera format many of new film maker or anyone who done know about filming and edit most likely suggest me to film in 4K for the best quality images, but I personally follow introductory in thing that I have been taught because not every camera is capable of filming 4K, but if the camera is capable to film in 4K and what about the output. For this documentary I will use Sony fx100e this camera cannot film in 4K so the format for this camera is HD resolution 1920-1080 and frame rate is 25p and speed shutter at 50 double of frame rate it’s enough for me to have a good quality images. The reason of set frame rate at 25p it's becasue it is common frame rate setting that using in Europe. Other than images sound also important for this documentary due to this documentary is also contained an interview part so sound of the interview have to be crystal clear.
For the sound I have chosen to use lavalier microphone in order to capture a perfect interview sound for the documentary, reason that I choose to use lavalier microphone is because this kind of mic is purpose build for interview so it will not capture any of location sound like the shotgun mic, because for this documentary sound of the location or the diegetic sound is unnecessary for my documentary.

Approach To Narrative: Embedding and Embedded Narrative

Lost in La Mancha

In today blog I will talk about a documentary called Lost in La Mancha, this documentary is talking about the making of Terry Gilliam’s unfinished film The Man Who Kill Don Quixote. In this documentary I can identify the use of embedded narrative, In the Lost in La Mancha, the embedding narrative which is the documentary Lost in La Mancha itself and the Embedded narrative or the narrative that bing contain within other narrative is The Man Who Kill Don Quixote film. In Lost in La Mancha I could not identify any of micro texts due to this documentary not really going deep into the making the film, this documentary is just observing the surface of the making of The Man Who Kill Don Quixote, but not really going into each particular problem that the production team has. From my spectator perspective, I could not indemnify any of micro text such as ideological or any psychological. In this documentary I can see that narrative of the documentary is shifting between the embedding narrative which is the container narrative to the embedded narrative which is the containing narrative quite often, for example in one sense audiences is watching the making of the film and then the narrative is switching to some part of the film this is what I personally feel like the narrative of the documentary is shifting to the narrative of a film. Throughout the documentary, I could not identify the sense of validity, due to the narrative of the documentary it that clear in term of the reason by is the film not being complete. At the end of the documentary, the audience is being informed that one of the main actors it could not come back to finish the film until the next six month, from a spectator perspective this not the main reason of not complete the film, so I think the sense of validity of being documentary still not complete from my spectator perspective.
