Film Theories: Realism

Realism of films

Realism is a theory that alway being together with the world of cinema for a decade together with formalism. In today blog I will use realism to analyses a film by choice, but before I can analyses a films by using the aspect of realism theory first I have to understand on what is realism. Realism is a theory that focusing on a realistic of cinema in many aspect in contrasting to formalism that more into a imerginary narrative aspect of cinema. In realism people are put a lot of attention into camera angle and movement, prop and costume design, the use of music, lighting, editing  and the use of location in order to create a new whole world that look and feel realistic and believable when that audience are watching it on a big scene.

My choice of chosen for today subject it will not be a film from Marvel cinematic universe, because a film from that universe is difficult to identify realistic aspect from it. The film that I am chosen for this topic is a Hacksaw Ridge, in this blog I will identify the realistic of this film due to this film is base on a historical event and person so I will compare a scene from this movie to a reality of what it actuary happen in the history of World War 2.
Hacksaw Ridge is setting on a life of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss who serve in US army during the World War 2, Doss unite under command of Sergeant Howell is assigned to 77th Infantry Division and deployed to the Pacific theatre. Now, who knows where is the movie are taking place and time, so now we Will identify the realistic of this movie. First looking at the realistic of setting, in this images we see that in reality, a cliff that Doss and his comrade has to climb up is not that hight like what Mel Gibson has presented to us. I understand the reason of making to cliff higher than reality is to create an emotion of impossibility to the movie, but in tears of realism, this is an error.

Next I will take about the realities of an action scene of this movie, from the aspect of camera movement I can say that the action scene in Hacksaw Ridge it’s in between realism and formalism due to some scene is quite over, for example in the scene that one soldier carrying a remaining of other soldier and walking toward to the enemy line, in realism he will get shot since he started walking we don’t have to take about carrying part of other solder and killing Japanese soldier at the same time with a heavy M1918 BAR that weight up to 7.25 kg, in reality, that is impossible to happen.

This just two example of realism clash in a film that supports to be realistic. This just the beginning of realism analysis. I WILL BE BACK !!
